How to Identify a Heavy-Duty Truck Clutch Before Ordering

Selecting a heavy-duty truck clutch by diameter alone creates a high risk of mismatch. Two clutch kits may share the same nominal diameter while using a different hub profile, spline count, pressure-plate height or release system. The safest purchasing process combines the original part number with measurements, vehicle information and clear photographs.

Heavy-Duty Truck Clutch Identification Checklist

1. Record every readable part number

Photograph the markings on the clutch cover, clutch disc and release component before cleaning or discarding the old assembly. Record spaces, leading zeros and suffixes exactly. A supplier reference can help identification, but it should be checked against the complete application rather than treated as proof of fitment.

2. Confirm the clutch diameter

Measure the outside diameter of the clutch disc in millimetres. Common heavy-truck sizes include 350 mm, 365 mm, 380 mm, 400 mm, 420 mm and 430 mm, but diameter is only the first filter.

3. Measure the hub and count the splines

Confirm the hub bore or shaft size, spline count and any available hub dimensions. Photographs should show the splines straight-on and include a ruler or calliper reading. Do not estimate the spline count from a distant image.

4. Identify the release system

Check whether the vehicle uses a conventional release bearing, fork-operated system, concentric slave cylinder or automated clutch actuation. Eaton’s heavy-duty clutch service information identifies the flywheel, clutch discs, pilot bearing, alignment tool and mounting hardware as separate installation elements, illustrating why a complete system check matters.

5. Provide the truck and driveline information

Send the truck manufacturer, model, model year, engine and transmission details. ZF Aftermarket explains that commercial-vehicle clutch applications can be searched by part number or by vehicle manufacturer and type in its product catalogue. Combining both methods is more reliable than using either one alone.

6. Compare pressure-plate construction and height

Supply clear front, rear and side photographs of the clutch cover. Confirm the overall height, mounting-hole pattern and any pull-type or push-type features. Similar-looking covers can have different release geometry.

7. Confirm what is included in the kit

State whether the enquiry is for a clutch cover, clutch disc, release bearing or complete kit. ZF notes that commercial-vehicle clutch kits may combine the pressure plate, clutch disc and release component. The requested scope should therefore be written clearly on the enquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I order a truck clutch using only the diameter?

No. Diameter does not confirm the hub, splines, cover height, mounting pattern or release system. Send the part number and complete measurements.

Is an OE number enough to confirm fitment?

An OE or cross-reference number is an important starting point, but the truck model, transmission and physical dimensions should also be checked, especially when markings are incomplete or the vehicle has been modified.

Which photographs are most useful?

Provide straight-on photographs of both sides of the clutch disc and cover, a side view showing height, close-ups of every marking, and a clear image of the hub splines.
